Working Overseas
Working in Europe
Once you qualify from dental school in the UK, you can be registerd with the GDC and can then work as a dentist anywhere in Europe. However, it is much easier to find work if you have already completed your Dental Foundation Training.
Working outside Europe
Depending on where you want to work, you will have to check whether your qualifications and registration is recognised in that country. You may have to do further study or take extra exams. Most countries have a governing body for dentistry (The UK has the GDC). Make sure you contact the equivalent body in the country you wish to work in early on.
Taking time out to volunteer
Many people want to take time out to work in developing countries once they qualify. It is a good idea to think about your options and the timing of your trip carefully so that you make the most of your time.
When is a good time?
You can be registered with the GDC as soon as you graduate, and can work as a dentist anywhere in Europe and in many other parts of the world.
However, many volunteer agencies (such as VSO) will only accept people with at least two years post qualification experience.
Also, if you wish to come back to the UK to work, you will need to complete your DFT. Since you need to complete your DFT within a certain time of graduating, it is probably a good idea to take time out after you have completed your DFT. (You will also have more money to spend on your trip)
